Kitesurfing Teen Smashed into Cliff Dies Two Days after Graduation

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Friends and family are mourning a kitesurfing Los Altos teen who was smashed into a cliff by strong winds just two days after graduation.

Derek Abraham died Thursday along Panther Beach north of Santa Cruz when friends say he may have misjudged his landing and was hurled into the cliff.

The 18-year-old Eagle Scout had just graduated from Los Altos High School. He was still a novice at the sport -- in which a large parachute-like kite pulls a rider on a small surfboard.

Witnesses say Abraham -- who could not be resucitated after the accident, likely died of a head injury.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
