OAKLAND, CA (AP) - Police are hunting for thieves who stole ornaments from a memorial marking the deadly fire that charred the Oakland hills in 1991.
Oakland police say two bronze reproductions of trees and aluminum plaques with the names of 25 people who died in the fire were stolen from the Oakland Firestorm Memorial Garden. Another bronze tree was badly damaged.
Officers say it's hard to estimate the cost of the damage, but the total could easily reach several thousand dollars. Investigators suspect the memorial was the target of vandals or thieves who intend to sell the metal objects for a profit.
The memorial was dedicated in 1994. Most of the $100,000 spent on it was donated.
