MORENO VALLEY, CA (AP) - A paroled child molester whom authorities called a dangerous man has died in a hospital jail ward.
54-year-old David Dokich had brain cancer. He died Friday at a Riverside County hospital.
Dokich was hospitalized in April for head injuries after another inmate brutally attacked him. He recovered but doctors discovered his cancer during treatment and he remained in the jail ward.
Dokich served two years in prison for the 1982 rape of a girl in Orange County and was convicted again in 1987 of raping a 16-year-old Lake Elsinore girl.
He left prison in 2005 but his release into a Mead Valley group home led to angry protests by locals.
Dokich was re-arrested in 2006 after deputies tracked him to a billiard hall and arcade where alcohol is served and children gather - both parole violations.
At the time of his death, Dokich was awaiting trial to determine if he should be committed to a state mental facility as a sexually violent predator.
