LAKE SHASTA, Calif. (AP) - A woman and her 7-year-old son drowned in Lake Shasta despite an attempt by bystanders to rescue
Two fishermen say they saw 47-year-old Susan Whitmore floating face down in a cove near Silverthorne Resort on Monday afternoon.
Her son was holding on to her.
Hing Lotakhoon of Redding and another man swam to the pair and tried to grab the boy, who struggled before slipping under the water.
Shasta County Sheriff's Capt. Dave Dean says the mother apparently swam out to rescue her son but drowned after reaching him. The woman's 8-year-old son was able to make it to shore safely.
Lake Shasta is about 200 miles north of the state capital.
