MERCED, Calif. (AP) - A man convicted of tormenting his step children, then trying to hire a hit man to kill them, faces at least 218 years behind bars.
Jurors in Merced County Superior Court took just one day to convict Charles Robert Wilson on Thursday on 21 counts of rape, attempted murder and child molestation.
Prosecutors believe the abuse took place in multiple jurisdictions while Wilson was in the Army, as well as in Merced County. Prosecutor David Sandhous called Wilson the most sadistic sexual predator he's convicted in 20 years.
To cover up the years of abuse, Wilson attempted to hire someone in 2008 to kill the children and their mother. The hit man called police instead. An undercover officer taped Wilson offering $30,000 for the murders.
