Police Say 1 Dead, 2 Hurt in Irvine Hostage Siege

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Irvine police say a five-hour hostage
standoff has ended with the arrest of a gunman. But one person is
dead and two have been hospitalized.

Alwyn Gibson, 24, of Fairfield, Texas was arrested shortly after
2 a.m. Saturday for investigation of murder.

Lt. Rick Handfield says Gibson is the ex-boyfriend of an Irvine woman. Police say he knocked on her family's door at around 9 p.m. Friday and took her father, mother and brother hostage.

A SWAT team evacuated at least six surrounding homes and hostage
negotiations began. However, Handfield says before Gibson
surrendered, he apparently used a silenced handgun to kill the father and wound the other two hostages.

Handfield says Gibson's ex-girlfriend doesn't live at the home and wasn't there at the time of the shootings.
