MOJAVE, Calif. (AP) - Fire officials say four people died and a fifth has been critically injured after a vehicle smashed into center divider on Highway 58 about 10 miles east of Mojave.
Kern County Fire Engineer Corey Wilford tells the Bakersfield Californian (http://bit.ly/11CwbJB ) the critically injured victim was airlifted to a hospital.
The cause of Monday's crash was not immediately clear. Authorities say it appears the car crashed into the center divider, causing passengers to be ejected from the vehicle.
Traffic continued to move on Highway 58 despite lane closures in both directions.
