CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) - Police say a 34-year-old man was arrested after he led them on a pursuit, abandoned his car, waded into a lagoon and then tried to drown a pursuing police dog.
Lt. Marc Reno says Lavar Toosweet McKiernan was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, attempting to harm a police dog and felony evading causing injuries.
McKiernan, whose vehicle collided with another car and hit a telephone poll, was treated for unspecified injuries at a hospital.
Reno says the pursuit began about 8:30 p.m. Saturday after officers attempted to pull McKiernan over for a traffic stop.
As he hid in the lagoon, police say, McKiernan grabbed the dog sent to fetch him and tried to hold it under water.
