TURLOCK, Calif. (AP) - Students fearing the call of nature during long-term lockdowns no longer have to worry in this city, where school officials have secured emergency toilets for every classroom.
Teachers returned for the semester to find the bathroom-in-a-box, including stool, collection bag and privacy curtain. It's marked "For Lockdown Only."
The problem arose last fall when Patterson High School students
spent four hours in classrooms after a fight on campus. Students
relieved themselves in trash cans until police cleared the campus.
It cost $14,000 to outfit the 701 classrooms in the city.
Assistant Superintendent Patricia McGuire said: "It's a small
price to pay for personal dignity."
