Officer Resigns After Bay Area Station Shooting

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer
who fatally shot an unarmed man on a train platform has resigned
from the transit agency.

BART officials say representatives for 27-year-old Johannes Mehserle submitted the resignation letter on his behalf Wednesday.

Oscar Grant, of Hayward, was lying face-down on the platform at Oakland's Fruitvale station when he was shot and killed early New
Year's Day. Mehserle was one of several officers responding to
reports about fighting on a train.

BART officials say Mehserle has been urged to cooperate with the
probe. So far, he has not met with investigators.

Hundreds of Grant's friends and relatives attended a funeral for the 22-year-old father at a Hayward church Wednesday.
