UCSC Student's Hypothermia May Be Hazing Related

DAVENPORT, Calif. (AP) - Investigators say a UC Santa Cruz student is still in the hospital weeks after falling unconscious at Bonny Doon Beach in what may have been a fraternity hazing incident.

Kirk Lingenfelter, a State Parks supervisor overseeing the Santa Cruz County coastline, said Wednesday that 20-year-old Warren Fung has regained consciousness but has remained hospitalized since the Dec. 15 incident.

Lingenfelter says police, the Santa Cruz County district attorney's office and park rangers are investigating whether a crime was committed.

He says it is unclear how long Fung was in the water or on the beach, where up to 50 people gathered as early as 7 a.m.

The university is awaiting the outcome of the State Parks investigation before looking into hazing.
