WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a 20-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy during a struggle over the lawman's weapon.
Sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht says the deputy and a colleague were investigating a report that two armed gang members accosted two
other men near Whittier early Thursday.
She says the deputies spotted a man who matched the description
of one suspect. When the suspect fled, the deputy chased him on
The suspect confronted the deputy and tried to grab his gun as the two fought. Hecht says the deputy feared for his life and fired his gun, striking the man in the upper torso.
The suspect - who has been identified as Xavier Fresquez - was hospitalized in critical condition but is expected to survive.
