LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) - An Orange County woman is in custody after a newborn girl was found in a trash bin.
Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says an 11-year-old girl found the baby in the bin near a Laguna Niguel apartment complex.
The newborn was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
Amormino says investigators are expected to seek attempted murder charges against the 38-year-old Laguna Niguel woman who is believed to be the newborn's mother.
He says deputies found the woman by following a trail of blood. She has not been identified.
Authorities believe the baby girl was born just hours before she was left in the trash container and that she had likely only spent about 15 minutes in the bin.
