Man Convicted In Torture Killing Could Be Executed

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego jury that convicted a Serra Mesa
man of torturing and strangling his girlfriend must now decide whether he should be executed.

Jurors on Monday convicted Jack Henry Lewis Jr. of the first-degree murder and torture of 48-year-old Jan Hasegawa, whose nude body was found in the couple's apartment nearly three years ago.

A special circumstance allegation of torture makes the 39-year-old Lewis eligible for death. The penalty phase begins Thursday to determine if he should be executed or sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
