SoCal Doctor Won't Face Charges In Patient Deaths

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A North Hollywood doctor won't face criminal charges in the deaths of six Ventura County patients.

A prosecutor said this week there isn't enough evidence to file against Dr. Bernard Bass.

Bass' attorney says the doctor feels terrible about the deaths - four of which occurred this year - but he's not responsible for them.

The 61-year-old pain specialist still faces a charge of conspiracy to distribute narcotics. He has pleaded not guilty to that charge.

Authorities contend he gave powerful and addictive painkillers to anyone who paid him $80 in cash, and wrote hundreds of prescriptions even after he surrendered his license to prescribe
