VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A judge in Ventura has sentenced a man to
life in prison without parole for killing another man during a carjacking.
A judge on Thursday sentenced Jermaine Robair of Oxnard for the
murder of Steven Knapp at a construction site along Highway 101
between Oxnard and Ventura in May 2006.
Robair was convicted in March of first-degree murder.
Prosecutor John West said Robair stabbed 54-year-old Knapp in the chest "about 13 times," pulled him from his truck and left him in the dirt. Knapp was brutally killed, West said, simply so Robair could steal "a 10-year-old truck."
Knapp was a welding inspector working at the Santa Clara River
bridge and co-workers said he often slept in his truck to save money.
