Most Calif. Fires Contained; Residents Return Home

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Fire crews have extinguished all but 38 of
the more than 2,000 blazes ignited over the past month.

Most mandatory evacuations are lifted so residents can return home for the weekend. Blazes in near Big Sur and in Butte County are nearing containment, while fires in Trinity and Shasta counties continue to threaten some homes.

Flames swept through 1,400 square miles around the state after a lightning storm on June 20 sparked multiple fires, leading to what officials have termed the largest fire event in California history.
