RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) - Fire officials say two people and 17 pets are dead after a fire early Sunday morning in a residential neighborhood outside of Sacramento.

A spokesman for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department says as fire crews battled a fire in a home in Rancho Cordova around 4 a.m. Sunday, they found two people dead inside.

Capt. Chris Quinn, a spokesman for the department, says the two victims were a man and a woman. Their names have not been released, but neighbors told Sacramento television station KCRA the victims were a married couple in their 70s.

Quinn says four dogs, three cats and 10 birds were also killed in the fire.

With investigators still processing the scene Sunday morning, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
