SAN DIEGO (AP) - A San Diego Sheriff's Department commander says authorities remain optimistic that two deputies shot in a gunbattle with a child abuse suspect will fully recover from their wounds.
Cmdr. Tim Curran says Detective Ali Perez was listed in critical condition Tuesday and Sgt. Craig Johnson was in serious condition after undergoing surgeries.
Curran says Monday's 15-minute shootout happened when the deputies went to arrest 30-year-old Daniel Witczak in rural Lakeside, east of San Diego.
Curran says a woman reported that Witczak had molested her children.
Scripps Health spokeswoman Janice Collins says Witczak was also shot and was in critical condition Tuesday.
