LA Schools Stop Serving Tomatoes Amid Salmonella Scare

The Los Angeles Unified School District has pulled raw tomatoes from its student menus over concerns about a salmonella outbreak.

School officials said Monday they have "indefinitely suspended" serving uncooked tomatoes, joining McDonald's, Burger King and other restaurant chains which are leaving tomatoes off sandwiches and salads in the wake of the food poisoning outbreak.

The district says the suspension will be in effect until federal health officials trace the source of tomatoes responsible for illnesses in at least 16 states.

The Food and Drug Administration is recommending that consumers avoid red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes unless they were grown in certain countries and states.
