Wildfire Burns Along I-5 In Southern Kern County

LEBEC, Calif. (AP) - A wildfire in Kern County is threatening 50 homes and there have been evacuations.

County fire Capt. Alex Entenman said the fire has burned 500 to 600 acres of steep brush and grassland since it broke out about 9:30 a.m. Friday in the mountainous Grapevine area along Interstate 5.

The fire is 20 percent contained. About 150 firefighters and 10 aircraft are on the scene. Some are protecting threatened homes in Digier (dee-Zhay') Canyon, where residents have been ordered to leave.

One southbound lane of I-5 is closed but traffic is moving normally.

The fire's cause is not known.
