Hammer Suspect Surrenders To SD Police

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A man suspected of beating his ex-girlfriend with a hammer has surrendered to San Diego police after a 12-hour standoff with SWAT officers.

San Diego police spokeswoman Monica Munoz says 54-year-old Walter Cordell surrendered late Saturday after officers sent in a police dog.

Police say the man is suspected of attacking his ex-girlfriend with a hammer Friday evening. She reportedly is hospitalized with broken bones.

SWAT officers surrounded the woman's home and fired tear gas into it after the man refused to surrender.
