State Investigates Toddler's Death At San Jose Day Care

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - State and local officials are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who accidentally strangled to death on his sweat shirt drawstring at the home where he received day care.

The California Department of Social Services visited the home after the toddler's May 21 death and cited the unnamed facility. A department spokesman would not say what the citation was for since the case still is under investigation.

The home, which is licensed to take 14 children, was cited before for not having enough staff on hand and not taking adequate steps to protect children from poisonous substances. Parents with youngsters at the facility were notified about the boy's strangulation.

The Santa Clara sheriff's department also is investigating the incident.
