Vietnam Deports American Pro-Democracy Activist From Sacramento

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - A Vietnamese-American activist from California has been expelled from Vietnam after he was sentenced to six months in jail on terrorism charges.

Nguyen Quoc Quan (win kwuk kwan), a mathematician from Sacramento, was deported yesterday.

Quan (kwan) was among several people arrested last November.
Vietnamese authorities claimed they were planning to circulate anti-government pamphlets on behalf of a California-based group called Viet Tan (tun).

The group says it promotes democratic change in the Communist
country, but Vietnam considers it a terrorist organization.

Quan was sentenced Tuesday, then deported after being given given credit for time served while awaiting trial.
