Carmichael Apartment Fire Leaves 75-Year-Old Man Dead

CARMICHAEL, Calif. (AP) - Investigators are probing the cause of a fire at a Carmichael apartment complex that left one man dead and sent other frantic residents running for safety.

The Saturday afternoon blaze engulfed the first-floor apartment of the man, identified by authorities as 75-year-old Jack Nye.

Assistant Fire Chief Greg Mugartegui of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said Nye seemed unable to move quickly enough to escape the flames. Neighbors said Nye had difficulty moving.

The fire displaced three families and Nye's elderly brother, who was not home when the fire broke out.

No one else was injured in the blaze, which caused an estimated
$350,000 in damages.
