BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Joe Shell, a conservative ex-Assemblyman who mounted a campaign against Richard Nixon for the 1962 Republican gubernatorial nomination, has died. He was 89.
Shell had been in declining health since breaking several ribs in January. He died Monday of natural causes at his Bakersfield
Shell's challenge substantially weakened Nixon's campaign, and
Democratic incumbent Pat Brown went on to win the governorship.
