LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County officials are negotiating
with a small hospital to take over and reopen troubled Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Medical Center.
The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that Pacific Hospital of Long Beach is considered the leading candidate. County Supervisor Yvonne Burke said negotiations could take about two months and the Willowbrook hospital could reopen by next February.
However, Pacific President Clark Todd said the inner-city facility would only have enough staff to care for 77 patients. Under county management, it had 400 beds.
King was closed last year after reports of poor care that resulted in patient deaths.
