A Los Angeles man accused of using an ax to kill his brother's pet basset hound has pleaded not guilty to an animal cruelty charge.
Prosecutors say Rudy Fernandez was arrested in South Los Angeles
last week after he allegedly tried to strangle the dog named Samantha for about a half hour, then delivered fatal blows to her skull with the ax.
Police say officers found the bloodied animal in a trash bin on Thursday after receiving a call from a tipster.
Police say Samantha belonged to Fernandez's brother, who was in jail at the time of the alleged attack.
Fernandez is being held on $40,000 bail.
He faces up to four years in state prison if convicted of the felony count.
