American Indian bone fragments have been unearthed at a Bolsa Chica Mesa construction site where a residential community is planned.
California Native American Heritage Commission officials say the Brightwater Hearthside Homes site may be an ancient burial ground of international importance.
Half the 174 bone fragments were found in the past 18 months.
Commission program analyst Dave Singleton says the property was once shared by the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians and Gabrieleno-Tongva.
After years of legal wrangling over plans to construct more than 300 homes at the site, developer Hearthside Homes got permission to build as long as bones are buried elsewhere.
