A teenager accused of molesting a 3-year-old girl is being charged as an adult and could spend the rest of his life behind bars if he's found guilty.
Sixteen-year-old Maix Gonzalez was taken into custody this past week after medical staff at Novato Community Hospital told police they had treated the girl for sexual assault injuries.
Gonzalez told police he came to the U.S. from his native Guatemala three months ago and rented a bedroom in the girl's mother's house in Novato.
Prosecutors say Gonzalez could face a sentence of 15 years to life if convicted of charges that include rape with a foreign object and forcible lewd acts with a child.
Gonzalez is being held at Juvenile Hall. A Marin County judge has raised his bail from $100,000 to $1 million.
