Auction of Alcatraz Flag Stirs Debate, Memories

A Texas bookstore owner is the owner of a flag said to have flown during the American Indian occupation of Alcatraz nearly 40 years ago.

During an auction yesterday at PBA Galleries in San Francisco, officials say the flag was sold for $69,000.

Officials didn't' release the name of the buyer, but Houston-area resident Bill Butler told the San Francisco Chronicle that he bought the flag to add to his collection of artifacts from the 1960s.

Butler also told the paper that he has spent $119,000 to buy a lock of Che Guevara's hair and $160,000 on a guitar once owned by Jimi Hendrix.

It's not clear how big a role the flag had in the 1969 protest. Some participants say they don't recall it.
