SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say 14 people, mostly Mexican citizens, have been arrested and a suspected smuggling boat found on a Central Coast beach.
San Luis Obispo County sheriff's officials say the 35-foot panga was found at Montana de Oro State Park.
Deputies conducting coastal patrols noticed vehicles traveling to the park Tuesday night and began conducting surveillance. Wednesday morning the deputies saw about five vehicles being loaded with people, pulled them over and found several packages of marijuana. The boat was later found on a secluded beach, and sheriff's officials say the vehicles had been meeting the panga to unload its cargo.
The small boats often used to ferry drugs into the U.S. from Mexico have been appearing farther north in recent years, and the Sheriff's Department received a federal grant to patrol for them.
