Rescuers Trying To Reach Hiker In Cold SoCal Mountains

Rescuers are trying to reach a Southern California man who became lost in bad weather during a weekend hike in the Mount Baldy area of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Authorities say Nathan Freund of Camarillo has been in touch with the search command post by cellphone to give his coordinates from a GPS locating device and to say he is OK and warm.

But an eight-person ground team was preparing to hike to his location Tuesday because heavy fog and icing conditions have ruled out a helicopter rescue.

Freund set out on a hike Sunday and had planned to return Monday, but became lost in the Big Horn Peak area when the weather changed.
