Students at California State University, Bakersfield are mourning the loss of one of their top swimmers.

Alexy Belyy, 26, died Friday afternoon in his apartment after swim practice, says Sarah Finney, assistant sports information director.

Belyy's roommates say he passed out after complaining of chest pains. They called 911 and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, according to a statement posted on the school's website.

The cause of death is unknown.

Belyy was a native of Russia. He was a breaststroke and freestyle simmer and held the school's record in the 400 yard individual medley.
