Prosecutors say two former Southern California police officers were part of a robbery ring that raided homes in search of money and drugs.
The corruption case against 35-year-old William Ferguson, and his 33-year-old brother, Joseph Ferguson, went to trial Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Federal prosecutors said during opening statements that William Ferguson, a former Los Angeles police officer, helped robbed the homes because he needed money after his wife filed for bankruptcy.
The defense urged jurors to "wait to see the evidence" and questioned the credibility of government witnesses.
The Ferguson brothers were charged two years ago in a federal indictment alleging they took part in at least 30 home invasion robberies in the Los Angeles area between 1999 and 2001.
