Oakland Zoo Plans to Raise Tiger Walls Following S.F. Attack

The Oakland Zoo plans to raise the height of the walls surrounding its tiger enclosure in the wake of a fatal tiger attack in San Francisco.

Oakland Zoo executive director Joel Parrott says the walls surrounding its two tigers range from 13½ to 16 feet.

Parrott says the zoo is deciding how much higher to raise the concrete wall and a chain-link fence surrounding the tiger pen.

The 12½-foot wall at San Francisco Zoo's tiger enclosure was about 4 feet below the recommended minimum for U.S. zoos. A 350-pound Siberian tiger escaped there Christmas Day, killing a teen and badly mauling two men.

The Oakland Zoo's tiger exhibit includes a female Bengal tiger weighing 230 pounds and a female Siberian-Bengal mix weighing 305 pounds.
