A jetliner returned safely to Los Angeles International Airport after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.
Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration said an ATA Airlines Boeing 757 took off from LAX around 9 a.m.
Tuesday and was a half-hour into a flight to Hawaii when the pilot declared an emergency.
The plane circled back to the airport and flew around to burn up fuel, then landed shortly after 10 a.m.
Nobody on board was hurt and the cause of the problem is under investigation.
There was minor disruption to LAX operations.
