Oakland Man Gets Life For 2005 Murder of Black Muslim Leader

A man convicted of first-degree murder for the 2005 slaying of Antar Bey, then the head of Your Black Muslim Bakery, will spend the rest of his life in prison for the crime.

The Alameda County Superior Court Judge who sentenced Alfonza
Phillips III on Friday to life in prison without parole also gave Phillips 28 years for discharging a firearm and attempted carjacking.

Phillips sat quietly as the sentence was read. Supporters of the Bey family cheered when the judge spoke. But Phillips' family and friends broke into loud sobs.

Prosecutors argued in court that Phillips shot Bey at an Oakland gas station on Oct. 25, 2005 while trying to steal the expensive rims on Bey's car.

Bey had assumed control of the store chain about a year beforehis murder. The founder, Yusuf Bey, had died of cancer in 2003.
