California Requires Businesses To Report Annual Gas Emissions

California has become the first state in the nation to require oil refineries, electricity generating plants, glass container makers and other businesses to report their annual greenhouse gas emissions.

The mandatory reporting rule was approved Thursday by state air
regulators.

The requirement would affect about 800 facilities that account for about 95 percent of emissions from industrial sources.

Businesses will begin tracking their emissions next year with the first report due to the state in 2009.
