An 11-year-old Burbank student collapsed during a gym class run at John Muir Middle School and later died at a hospital.
Sixth-grader Austin Cook was running with the rest of his class when he was stricken Thursday. He was conscious initially and complaining of chest pain.
Paramedics were called and the boy was taken to Providence Saint
Joseph Medical Center where he died several hours later.
Burbank police and school officials said the boy apparently died of a heart problem. A Los Angeles County coroner's autopsy will determine the cause of death.
