Authorities say a man apparently committed suicide early this morning when he stepped in front of a car on a highway, then was struck by a pickup truck.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on westbound Highway 78.
An investigator with the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office said the dead man has been identified as 46-year-old Richard Staples.
CHP officers said Staples was seen walking against traffic in the roadway, and stepped into the path of a 1996 Infinity. The impact sent him into the path of a 1997 Toyota pickup truck, which then veered into the center divider.
Staples was pronounced dead at the scene, and the highway had to
be closed for about two hours early this morning.
No one else was seriously injured.
