Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is recovering from surgery this morning to remove a metal plate and cables from his leg. The hardware was used to help his upper thigh bone heal after he broke it while skiing nearly a year ago.
The orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery at a Los Angeles hospital says in a statement that there were no complications.
Doctor Kevin Ehrhart says removing the hardware is standard practice after the leg has fully healed. He says the second-term Republican governor will be using a crutch the next few days.
A Schwarzenegger spokesman says the governor turned over power
to the lieutenant governor for about 90 minutes.
Schwarzenegger is expected to return home this afternoon.
