The City Council has given the Los Angeles Police Department the go-ahead to hire as many officers as it can this fiscal year.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says he is "elated" with the action. He had campaigned on a pledge to hire as many as 1,000 more officers. He had also threatened to veto any move by the council that would limit new hires this fiscal year, which started in July.
The plan approved by the council will give the LAPD the ability
to hire as many as 780 new officers this year. That would be a net
gain of 226, after retirements and attrition are factored in.
