The Los Angeles Police Department Wants to Map Muslim Communities

The Los Angeles Police Department wants to map the city's Muslim communities to pinpoint their potential for housing terrorist cells.

Deputy Chief Michael Downing says the mapping will allow the LAPD to reach out to Pakistani, Iranian and Chechen enclaves. There are an estimated half-million Muslims in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

But the plan is meeting resistance from some Muslim groups and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California. They call it racial profiling.

But the Muslim Public Affairs Council says it is considering working with the LAPD on the project.
