UC Berkeley will be getting a $10 million gift from the Dow Chemical Co. Foundation.
In announcing the pledge Tuesday, the university says the money will go to research on ideas and products designed to minimize harm
to future generations.
A school official says some of those projects could include increasing the level of clean drinking water in impoverished parts of the world or looking at alternative and renewable energy materials.
The program is getting $2 million initially from the foundation, with $8 million promised over the next five years.
The announcement of the money from Dow comes as UC Berkeley deals with a controversy for partnering with oil giant BP in a $500
million program to research biofuels.
