Chino Prison Guards Convicted In Assault Case

The U.S. Attorney's Office says three correctional officers at Chino state prison were convicted of federal offenses related to assault.

A Los Angeles jury yesterday found Robert McGowan guilty of two
counts of deprivation of rights under color of law for assaulting two inmates.

Thomas Ramos and Hector Flores were convicted of attempting to cover up the assaults.

The convictions stem from a May 9, 2002, dispute at the prison.

Several prisoners were shackled, placed in a van and transported to
a segregation unit.

When McGowan pulled two prisoners from the van, they fell to the
ground but couldn't break their falls because they were shackled,
authorities say.

McGowan faces up to 25 years in prison, and Ramos and Flores face up to five years.

Scheduling is set for January.
