A 9-year-old boy who was found dead in the apartment he shared with his mother is the focus of a police investigation, but authorities say it's too soon to say whether he was a homicide victim.
A Berkeley police spokeswoman says the boy's mother is being treated at a hospital for cuts on her neck and arms and is too distraught to give a coherent statement.
Before officers arrived, the mother called a friend in San Jose saying her son was dead and she was injured.
Police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss says the child's body did not have any visible signs of trauma. Detectives are withholding details, including the child's name, until they are further in their investigation.
