About 5,000 nurses who work in 15 Northern California hospitals are now on strike.
A two-day strike affecting 13 San Francisco Bay area hospitals affiliated with the Sutter Health hospital chain -- along with two Sacramento-area hospitals -- began this morning (7:00).
The nurses -- represented by the California Nurses Association -- are at odds with hospital management over staffing issues, retirement security and a proposal to shift more of the financial burden onto nurses for their own health care.
Hospital officials say they have hired replacement workers in place and patients should expect no disruptions in service.
