Manteca Drafts Rules To Crack Down On Metal Theft

City officials are drafting new rules for recycling yards to help crack down on thieves who steal metal and sell it to junk dealers.

The proposed ordinance is expected to reach the city council within the next month. It would activate safeguards passed by San Joaquin County Supervisors last month.

The new county rules require recyclers to detail the items they receive, keep them for a holding period while police check items against those reported stolen and only pay customers by check.
