State water regulators say the U.S. Maritime Administration may face fines over toxic paint falling from obsolete ships into Suisun bay.
A Notice of Violation sent yesterday by the Bay Area Water Quality Control Board says penalties could reach $25,000 per day.
The Maritime Administrations most recent inventory showed 74 ships in what is known as the "mothball fleet."
At least 56 are slated for disposal.
